Post Grenfell Fire: Modern Methods of Construction

Recently published in the UK is the Hackitt Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety that makes recommendations for the prescribed use of building information modelling (BIM) systems, to assist in ensuring building owners and occupiers are fully aware of the nature and style of construction used and, associated safety systems installed. The benefits of such an approach will be explored alongside the steps that can be taken to ensure that during maintenance, repair or refurbishment works, appropriate decision making makes sure standards of safety and resilience are not compromised.
The UK Fire Protection Association is holding a seminar that aims to provide a forecast for the future alongside clarifying the risks associated with the use of combustible materials and modern building methods and the steps that can be taken to mitigate and ensure resilience.
This event will identify some of the methods and materials being commonly utilised in the construction of our housing, retail, education, health and warehouse premises.
It will address the drivers for choosing one method or material over another – be it speed, cost, environmental impact etc and explore the challenges each present during the construction phase, but more importantly on the safety and resilience of the premises in use from risks such as fire and flood. Issues associated with the use of renewable energy to heat and cool such premises will also be explored.
The seminar is on 26 September 2018 at the Fire Service College, Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire, GL56 0RH, UK and intends to achieve the following learning outcomes:
- to gain a better understanding of what methods of construction are being used in today’s world
- how these methods are promoted
- what are the challenges of said methods
- are the fire safety and flood control measures appropriate?
- how are BREEAM building tackling resilience?
- is the legislation appropriate?
- what ongoing passive and maintenance should you be aware of?
