Firstly, efforts have concentrated on consolidation and completion of the existing legislation by extending its scope, delegating the power to adopt technical amendments, making the national price control and refund schemes more transparent, acceding to the European Pharmacopoeia, harmonizing the conditions for administering medicines to patients and providing fuller information on medicinal products. The Communication, Towards a European strategy for nanotechnology (ftp://ftp.cordis.lu/pub/nanotechnology/docs/nano_com_en.pdf) provides a series of recommendations and initiatives on how to strengthen European research and development (R&D) in the field and help turn nanotechnologies into commercially viable products for the benefit of society. Key actions include boosting R&D investment and infrastructure, improving training for research personnel, enhancing technology transfer in Europe and its financing, taking into account the impact of nanotechnology on society and increasing international co-operation towards a responsible approach to nanotechnology R&D globally. Scientific investigation and assessment of possible health or environmental risks associated with nanotechnology need to accompany the R&D and technological progress. Some dedicated studies are underway to assess the potential risks, which are also examined within FP6 IPs and NEs projects in the field of nanotechnology. In particular, nanoparticles might behave in unexpected ways due to their small size. They may present special challenges, for example, in terms of production, disposal, handling, storage and transport.

- European Maritime Safety Agency, EMSA
- PORTUGAL
- www.emsa.europa.eu
- European Maritime Safety Agency's main objective is to provide technical and scientific assistance to the European Commission and Member States in the proper development and implementation of EU legislation on maritime safety, pollution by ships and security on board ships. To do this, one of EMSA's most important supporting tasks is to improve cooperation with, and between, Member States in all key areas. In addition, the Agency has operational tasks in oil pollution preparedness, detection and response. As a body of the European Union, the Agency sits at the heart of the EU maritime safety network and collaborates with many industry stakeholders and public bodies, in close cooperation with the European Commission. Maritime transport is of fundamental importance to Europe and the rest of the world. To put this in perspective, over 90% of European Union external trade goes by sea and more than 3.7 billion tonnes of freight a year are loaded and unloaded in EU ports. This means that shipping is the most important mode of transport in terms of volume. Furthermore, as a result of its geography, its history and the effects of globalisation, maritime transport will continue to be the most important transport mode in developing EU trade for the foreseeable future. In this context, European citizens have the right to expect their maritime passenger and goods transport to be safe, secure and clean. So, in support of these goals, and particularly in the wake of the Erika and Prestige oil tanker accidents, the set up of EMSA (under Regulation (EC) No 1406/2002 of 27 June 2002) is one of the key EU level initiatives aimed at improving the situation.

- European Agency for Health and Safety at Work: Road Transport Drivers
- SPAIN
- http://osha.europa.eu/en/sector/road_transport
- European Agency for Health and Safety at Work Managing occupational safety and health risks to drivers in the road transport sector can be challenging because drivers work alone, away from their base, and have to contend with traffic danger in addition to many other risks that are difficult for them to control. But risk management measures can be successful if they take account of how the sector operates in practice, as well as the characteristics of drivers themselves and the way they work. The road transport sector includes: Lorry and van drivers; Taxi drivers and chauffeurs; Bus and coach drivers; Bicycle and motorbike delivery services. Working in the road transport sector requires high levels of professional skill and competence. For example, drivers of long-distance road haulage vehicles must not only be capable drivers but they must also be able to load and unload, repair technical problems, have certain language skills, carry out basic administration, and act as 'ambassadors' for their company in other countries. They have to deliver their goods in time, regardless of weather and road conditions. They may transport dangerous substances or fragile goods that require extra care and responsibility. In the road transport sector, as with any other, it is important to pay attention to working conditions in order to ensure a skilled and motivated workforce.

The Database of Legislative Texts on Occupational Safety and Health (LEGOSH) that is presented here consists of references to more than 3500 (as of 2001) laws, regulations and international legal instruments dealing with OSH matters in approximately 140 countries and international organizations. References to the ILO's OSH-related Conventions are of course also included. These legal texts are classified according to two main criteria: Jurisdiction (country, lower-level jurisdiction [state, province, etc.] or international organization); Subject categories. The database is presented in static HTML files. The Index lists countries, provinces and international organizations, with hyperlinks to further (country, province, organization) index files. In these second level indexes, individual titles are organized by subject category and linked to their description. In addition, within the scope of a country with lower-level jurisdictions, the subject category lists of these jurisdictions and federal legislation are interlinked. Within each subject category, further sorting is chronological, with the most recent legal texts listed first. Titles in bold face are the major texts (laws, decrees etc.), while those printed with normal lettering are subsidiary pieces of legislation. Useful starting point for those seeking legislation in other countries.

These datasheets are intended for those professionally concerned with health and safety at work including: occupational physicians and nurses, safety engineers, hygienists, education and information specialists, inspectors, employers' representatives, workers' representatives, safety officers and other competent persons. They are available online. The Datasheets list in a standard format different hazards to which a worker, in the normal course of normal work, may be exposed to. It provides several measures for the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases. These datasheets are a source of information rather than advice. Each Datasheet is, to a certain degree, similar to a Chemical Safety Data Sheet (also known as a Material Safety Data Sheet). The Chemical Safety Data Sheet is a standardized document that serves to alert both the worker and the occupational safety and health professional about the relevant hazards at the workplace as well as means of prevention on a specific chemical substance. However, unlike the Chemical Safety Data Sheets, the International Hazard Datasheets on Occupations is designed to cover the range of hazards to which the worker may be exposed to while performing the tasks typically associated with the occupation being addressed. The currently available Datasheets have been developed in a project undertaken by the ILO and the Israel Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene (IIOSH), in cooperation with the European Union and ILO/CIS Centres throughout the world.

- SWITZERLAND
- www.who.int/peh-emf/en
- The World Health Organization (WHO) Globalisation of trade and the rapidly expanding use of electrical devices have focused attention on the large differences existing in standards limiting exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Disparities in EMF standards around the world have arisen from different interpretations of the scientific data that underlie all of the standards and from different philosophies for public health standards development. Differences in EMF exposure guidelines might also reflect, in part, deficiencies in communications among scientists between different regions. Large disparities in international guidelines can increase public anxiety about increasing EMF exposures from the introduction of new technologies. This web site contains details of the International EMF Project, The EMF Research Database, health topics, research tools, standards, publications and other information sources. In November 1998, WHO commenced a process of harmonization of EMF standards worldwide. Over 54 countries and 8 international organizations are involved in the International EMF Project.

- World Health Organization (WHO): Violence in the health sector
- SWITZERLAND
- www.who.int/violence_injury_prevention/injury/work9/en
- World Health Organization (WHO) website on violence at work. The enormous cost of workplace violence for the individual, the workplace and the community at large is becoming more and more apparent. Recent information shows that the current knowledge is only the tip of the iceberg. While workplace violence affects practically all sectors and all categories of workers, the health sector is at major risk: more than half of all workers in this sector may have experienced violent incidents at some point. Ambulance and pre-hospital emergency staff are reported to be at greatest risk, nurses are three times more likely, on average, to experience violence in the workplace than other occupational groups. Since the large majority of the health workforce is female, the gender dimension of the problem is very evident. The International Labour Office (ILO), the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the World Health Organization (WHO) and Public Services International (PSI) launched in 2000 a joint programme in order to develop sound policies and practical approaches for the prevention and elimination of violence in the health sector. The "Framework Guidelines for Addressing Workplace Violence in the Health Sector" are intended to support all those responsible for safety in the workplace, be it governments, employers, workers, trade unions, professional bodies or members of the public. The tool will guide you through the complexity of issues to be considered when developing anti-violence policies and strategies for all work-settings in the health sector. These can be adapted to meet local and national needs and constraints.
